Policies FAQ

Welcome to the Library – Policies FAQ Sheet

Library Cards

To obtain a library card at Valley Center Public Library, individuals must complete an application and return it to the Library, along with a photo ID.  A valid Kansas ID is required.  If the patron does not have a valid Kansas ID, he or she may still obtain a library card, however, will be limited in number of items checked out until a valid Kansas ID can be obtained.

Minors may apply for a library card, however, a parent or guardian must also have a valid library card.  The parent or guardian must sign the minor’s application, agreeing to assume financial responsibility for the minor, and to oversee the minor’s use of the library.

Click on “Patron registration form” below, print the form, complete, and return to the library.  A form may also be obtained at the library.

Lost or Damaged Materials

Library patrons are responsible for materials checked out in their name or the names of their children.  Lost books or other items will be replaced at market value as determined by reliable sources, i.e., Books in Print or a comparable source.  An item that is damaged beyond repair will also be replaced at market value.  Items that are no longer in print will be assessed at market value in order to purchase a similar item.  If fishing poles are damaged beyond use or not returned, replacement cost will be $10.00.  A $5.00 processing fee will be assessed in addition to the cost of the lost or damaged beyond repair materials other than periodicals.

If a damaged item is deemed by staff to be repairable, a time and materials fee will be assessed.

Returned Check Policy

If a check is returned from the bank (insufficient funds, stop payment, etc.), the patron will be required to redeem the returned check plus any bank charges incurred by the Library for the returned check with cash or cashier’s check. Returned checks remaining unredeemed after a reasonable period of time may be forwarded to a collection agency with the patron bearing the additional collection cost. Patrons who have two checks returned against their library account will be denied future check-writing privileges.
